IV Sedation

How IV Sedation Works
With safe and proven techniques, patients receive sedative drugs which work rapidly to create a relaxed state that is maintained and monitored throughout treatment. Beyond creating an optimal environment for you, the patient, dentistry with IV Sedation also allows us to complete multiple procedures in one appointment.
How is it done?
An IV is started by the anesthesiologist allowing all medications for relaxation to enter your body. You will not remember or be aware of any procedures or especially “getting numb.” You breathe on your own. This is not like the hospital anesthesia where a machine breathes for you.
Sedation Facts:
» It Really Works! You really can relax through your dental appointment.
» You will have little or no memory of the experience.
» You won't remember any sounds or smells.
» You can relax for up to five to six hours after the IV sedation (or the anti-anxiety pill if you choose). The time you are relaxing will vary depending on your needed treatment and type of anesthesia delivered.
» Complex dental treatments that often require multiple appointments can often be done in as little as one or two! All while you relax.
» People who have difficulty getting numb will have no problem when relaxed.
» Sedation dentistry is a safe way to reduce the fatigue of extended dental treatment requiring long visits.
Will I feel any pain?
You will feel almost nothing! We even numb the back of your hand prior to starting the IV.
How long will I be relaxing?
Depending on your needs, from two to six hours. You will rest for 3-4 hours when you get home also, most likely.
Will someone need to accompany me?
Yes, due to the sedative effects of the medication, you will need someone to drive you to our office and home again.
Will I be monitored?
Yes, one of our team is always with you and your vital signs are constantly monitored during the entire visit. You are never alone.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

How Nitrous Oxide sedation works
Nitrous oxide is a sedative gas (commonly called “laughing gas”) that you inhale through a small mask over you nose. It is a conscious anesthetic, so you are awake and can communicate throughout the dental procedure. It’s one of the safest forms of sedation available today. Nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen at all times. The relaxed and disassociated feeling disappears soon after the gas is turned off. You can drive back to your home or office right away.
When is Nitrous Oxide Sedation Used?
Nitrous oxide can be administered in all types of dentistry. Is it used during extractions, endodontic therapy, periosontal treatment and just about any time something is uncomfortable for you.
How is it done?
Nitrous oxide is given through a mask that fits over your nose and you simply breathe normally. The dosage can quickly be adjusted if needed by the dentist or staff. It quickly takes effect (less than 5 minutes) and the recovery time is about 5 to 10 minutes. If you start to feel uncomfortable at any time, you simply breathe through your mouth to stop the nitrous oxide intake.
What precautions must I take?
You should have an empty stomach, no heavy meals within 2 hours and no light snacks for 30 minutes. Notify your doctor of any changes in your medical history prior to administration of nitrous oxide and any medication you are taking.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?
Sedation Dentistry is very safe, and our sedated patients are monitored by our Dentist and staff members. Remember, with our nitrous oxide sedation, patients do not lose consciousness.
Who Should Not Use Sedation:
» Children who aren't old enough to understand what's going on
» Women who are pregnant
» People with severe bronchitis
» People with comprehension or communication difficulties
» People who cannot breathe through their noise
» People with lung problems
Physical Effects of Sedation:
» Numbness in legs or hands
» Feelings of weightlessness in extremities
» Feelings of warmth over your body
» Ringing sensation or distinct hearing
» Tingling feelings in hands or feet
