Sedation Dentistry
There are too many instances where patients do not receive the proper dental care they require simply because they are frightened by the idea of undergoing dental treatment. Some individuals have even tried to ignore important warning signs such as pain in the teeth or gums and have failed to receive corrective treatment, allowing their dental issues to evolve into much more serious health problems. Whether it be postponing a simple dental check-up or avoiding treatment for a serious dental concern, we at Polar Dental are committed to providing you with quality care customized to your individual needs.
There are a number of reasons why some individuals find the dental chair daunting. Our goal here at Polar Dental is to ensure that every visit our patients make to our office is pleasant and stress free. Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients who are either intimidated by the dentist's office or simply to provide comfort for a patient undergoing a longer procedure. For example, patients who undergo lengthier procedures that may require multiple visits can be safely and comfortably sedated making hours of chair time feel like minutes! Take control of your dental health and join us towards a healthier future with sedation dentistry!
Contact your Toronto dentist today to schedule your appointment to see if sedation dentistry is right for you! Our Polar Dental professionals will meet with you one on one to discuss your individuals needs and expectations. There we will review a list of options that are most appropriate for your specific circumstances. Our dentists will also review your medical history including any preexisting medical conditions to determine if you are a candidate for sedation dentistry.
How Sedation Dentistry Works:
Sedation dentistry uses nitrous oxide a sedative gas, more commonly known as 'laughing gas' that is inhaled through a small mask over your nose. It is a conscious anesthetic, so you are awake and can communicate throughout the procedure and is one of the safest forms of sedation dentistry available today. The nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen at all times. The relaxed and disassociated feeling will disappear soon after the gas has been turned off. You can drive back to your home or office right away!
When is Sedation Dentistry Used?:
Nitrous oxide can be administered for all areas of dentistry whether it be extractions, endodontic therapy(root canal treatment), periodontal treatment etc. Sedation dentistry is designed to provide comfort for our patients, whenever you feel uncomfortable about a procedure, ask our staff about sedation dentistry for more information.
How is Sedation Dentistry Performed?
Nitrous oxide gas along with oxygen is administered through a mask that comfortably fits over your nose so that you can breathe easily and normally. The dosage is easily and quickly adjusted by our staff at any time in the procedure. The effects of the nitrous oxide gas quickly take effect within five minutes. Within five to ten minutes of the sedation gas being turned off, you will feel normal once again and be safe to drive to your next destination. If at any time you feel uncomfortable simply breathe through your mouth to stop the intake of nitrous oxide.
Sedation Dentistry Precautions?
Before undergoing sedation dentistry you Polar Dental professional will instruct you not to consume any heavy meals for at least two hours and no light snacks for at least thirty minutes. You should have an empty stomach for your sedation appointment. Notify your dentist of any changes to your medical history prior to the administration of nitrous oxide along with any medication you may be taking.
